NEW RULES FOR THE CLASSIFICATION OF NAVAL SHIPS

    General
The Rules give the requirements for the assignment and the maintenance of class for seagoing surface naval ships built in welded steel, where the term naval ships includes warships, troopships and naval auxiliary ships.
The Rules maintain the same philosophy of merchant ships, customized to meet the peculiar arrangements and performance requirements of naval ships. They are kept continuously updated by the Society to ensure that the highest standards are always taken into account and properly implemented.
Applying the Rules implies for the Navy a significant reduction in terms of costs and time, since they:
    - allow procurement of materials, systems and equipment off the shelf
    - reduce the platform design and specification phase
    - standardize testing, inspections and surveys.

The Rules are subdivided in six parts, namely:
    - Part A Classification and Surveys,
    - Part B Hull and Stability,
    - Part C Machinery and Systems,
    - Part D Materials and Welding,
    - Part E Service Notations,
    - Part F Additional Class Notations.

    Part A Classification and Surveys
Part A of the Rules contains the basic principles of classification and the detailed description of the class notations. This part also defines all conditions for assignment, maintenance, suspension and withdrawal of class, and describes the activities to be carried out during the different types of surveys requested for all ships or related to a particular service or additional notation.

Part B - Hull and Stability
Part B of the Rules contains the requirements concerning structures and stability.
This part is subdivided in 12 Chapters, dealing with general arrangement design, i.e. subdivision of the ship, arrangement of compartments and openings, stability and sea-keeping properties, and basic principles of structure design. These principles are then developed in a detailed specification of the design loads to be applied in verifying the hull girder strength and the scantlings, both of hull and other structures, e.g. superstructures, movable decks and ramps or helicopter deck.
The part is completed with the requirements applicable to hull outfitting, e.g. rudders, and for corrosion protection and loading information.
All the structural properties are evaluated on a complete mathematical model of the hull, adopting direct calculation methods.
Meeting the requirements of this part does not only mean granting the normal strength and stability properties of a ship, but also ensures adequate additional performance peculiar to naval ships, e.g. in terms of increased fatigue strength or improved stability properties, that allow adequate operational performance in damaged conditions.

Part C Machinery, Systems and Fire Protection
Part C of the Rules contains the requirements for machinery, systems and fire protection. This part is subdivided in 4 chapters, namely machinery, electrical installations, automation, and fire protection, detection and extinction.

    Machinery
Machinery systems considered in the Rules are diesel engines, boilers and pressure vessels, steam and gas turbines, gearing, main propulsion shafting, propellers, steering gear, thrusters, turbochargers and refrigerating installations.
The machinery checks are completed with the requirements applicable to piping systems, e.g. bilge, ballast, sanitary, cooling, fuel, lubricating, etc.
Particular attention is given to the definition of performance criteria and tests on board meeting the severe operational conditions of a naval ship, e.g. ad hoc design calculations and checks are performed on all the parts of the shaft line.

    Electrical installations and automation
The requirements for electrical systems grant the high degree of redundancy needed to ensure the survivability and operational performance of a combat ship.
Automation systems designed in accordance with the Rules are capable of granting that all the decisions are promptly taken with all the needed information available in centralized positions, thus reducing both the delay and the number of people involved in non combat tasks.

    Fire protection, detection and extinction
Derived from the highest standards available for passenger ships, the requirements for fire protection deal with the general arrangement of the ship, the properties of materials in respect of fire, the detection and extinguishing systems and equipment. They grant adequate prevention of fire spread and minimal consequence, obtained through a balanced mix of active and passive requirements, that does not compromise the weight requirements of the ship.

Part D - Materials and Welding
Part D of the Rules contains the requirements for manufacturing and testing steel and iron products, e.g. plates, pipes, forgings and castings, and copper and aluminum alloy products.
Other equipment covered by this part are anchors, chain cables, steel and fibre ropes, windows and sidescuttles, pressure bottles and steel or copper propellers and propeller blades.
The part is completed by the requirements for welding consumables and procedures.
Being derived from the merchant procedures, the requirements ensure the high quality of materials allowing a significant reduction of costs.

    Part E - Service Notations
Part E of the Rules gives the special requirements developed in order to meet the particular arrangements and equipment of supply ships, aircraft carriers and helicopter carriers.

Part F - Additional Class Notations
Part F of the Rules contains specific requirements applicable when the additional military and non military class notations are requested.
